Synopsis

A surreal exploration of one woman's life and death against a landscape of meat, office desks, and bad men.

The Book of X tells the tale of Cassie, a girl born with her stomach twisted in the shape of a knot. From childhood with her parents on the family meat farm, to a desk job in the city, to finally experiencing love, she grapples with her body, men, and society, all the while imagining a softer world than the one she is in. Twining the drama of the everyday — school-age crushes, paying bills, the sickness of parents — with the surreal — rivers of thighs, men for sale, and fields of throats — Cassie’s realities alternate to create a blurred, fantastic world of haunting beauty.

Review:

I found this book through Scribd.

This is a strange coming of age tale. Cassie wants to be normal and even though she finds a friend who accepts her for how she is she still strives to be "normal". Her interactions with men are awkward and often end with them leaving after seeing how she is built or using her. She goes to doctors to try to fix the issue but nothing works.  Her life is just work and home.  She struggles to remain upbeat and happy in a world that values beauty and happiness.  I think Cassies best friend says it all when she tells her "Oh I thought you were over that and had accepted it". I wonder if Cassies life would have been different if she had accepted her differences instead of trying to "correct" them.
