Audio Book Review: You are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero

Release Date: September 16, 2013
Publisher: Hatchett Book Group
Format: Tantor Audio
Length: 5 hours 45 minutes
Narrator: Jen Sincero
Genre: Self Help
Buy: Audible | Kindle

Synopsis:

In this refreshingly blunt how-to guide, Sincero serves up 27 bite-sized chapters full of hilariously inspiring stories, life-changing insights, easy exercises, and the occasional swear word.

Via chapters such as "Your Brain Is Your Bitch", "Fear Is for Suckers", and "My Subconscious Made Me Do It", Sincero takes you on a wild joy ride to your own transformation, helping you create the money, relationships, career, and general all-around awesomeness you so desire. And should you be one of those people who dreads getting busted with a self-help book in your hands, fear not.

Sincero, a former skeptic herself, delivers the goods minus the New Age cheese, giving even the snarkiest of poo-pooers exactly what they need to get out of their ruts and start kicking some ass. By the end of You Are a Badass, you will understand why you are how you are, how to love what you can't change, how to change what you don't love, and how to start living the kind of life you used to be jealous of.

Review:

There are tons of self help books out there but this one is definitely one of the easier one's to understand. If you are new to the self help world this will give you a great foundation.  If you have read tons of self help books over the years this one is like a refresher course that just reinforces so many of the concepts in other books but told in a way that might make more sense.  I know it did for me.  I "know" most of the stuff that Sincero was talking about but practicing was escaping me.  She gave some good tips, tricks and ways to get unstuck.  Her different perspective on these concepts such as the universe is full of infinite possibilities and all you have to do is put it out there and believe it and it will happen, and why this may not be working for you,(stupid unconscious mind games) and how to break out of that negative thinking trap (meditation and love yourself) really helped me to put a different spin on things I thought I was already doing.

Its amazing how many times we put ourselves down or think oh I can't do that until....or I'm too old or too young etc...watch yourself for one day and see how many times we deny if someone tells us we look pretty or fit, or did an awesome job, or when we do something and it goes wrong and we call ourselves dumb, or whatever, we are putting those concepts out into the universe, no wonder we aren't achieving all we could! Change your thinking, change your life. Sounds simple enough! But breaking years of bad habits takes a bit of time so I'm going to be gentle with myself and try to catch myself when I find myself thinking in negative ways. Eventually it will become a habit.

I recommend this book for everyone.  We can all learn something from loving ourselves, believing in our greatness and not letting anything stand in our way of what we want to achieve.

She has left behind everything she has ever known chasing stability. His life literally hangs in the balance. Can she see beyond the chaos to the man behind the cut? Will they find their forever ride?

Review:

I don't think I could have been more anxious and angry than while reading this book. I needed Tank to come out of his coma and I was desperate for Sass to wake the fuck up about her pretty boy.  There were so many things that made me angry that Sass just accepted with her relationship that I wanted to shake her.  I know this type of thing happens all the time but I was desperate for someone to stop everything that I saw happening.  The fact that this book brought up so many emotions and really sucked me in like Sass was a friend of mine leads me to give it an excellent review. You don't get so emotionally caught up in a sucky book! Really well done and I will be definitely be reading more of this series. I am totally enamored by these Hellions and their sexy women.

Audio Book Review: One Ride (Hellions Ride book 1) by Chelsea Camaron

Release Date: April 26, 2016
Publisher: Tantor Audio
Format: Audio
Length: 7 hours 13 minutes
Narrator: Joe Arden, Maxine Mitchell
Genre: Romance

Synopsis:

Roundman, president of the Hellions Motorcycle Club, has kept the chaos surrounding the Hellions contained for the last 30 years. When the dangerous side to their business comes knocking on his only child's doorstep, he realizes that his precious daughter - Delilah ("Doll") - isn't safe anymore.
With Doll in danger from the association she has with him and his club, Roundman makes the only decision he feels he can - to send her away. Calling on the one charter club president he trusts, he sets up a ride to keep her safe, all in hopes that trouble won't follow.

Talon "Tripp" Crews has been ordered to take Doll on one ride away from the danger while the club handles the threat. She's off-limits. His head knows this, but his body can't deny the attraction. She's feisty, fierce, and fearless. Constantly in close confines together, will they give in to the desire? Can one ride turn lust into love?

Review:

Doll grew up with the Hellions.  She was their princess, the daughter of their leader. When someone tries to use Doll as leverage to cause the Hellions to run drugs, her father Roundman sends her on a ride. Talon has been ordered to take Doll away from the club and keep her safe, she is supposed to be off limits but as the ride continues he knows she is supposed to be on the back of his bike with him and he never wants to let her go.  The heat between these two is hot.  This is like reading a smoking hot version of Sons of Anarchy.  I loved it and can't wait to read the rest.

Audio Book Review: Locked in Silence (Pelican Bay book 1) by Sloane Kennedy

Release Date: December 1, 2017
Publisher: Sloane Kennedy
Format: Audio
Length: 8 hours 55 minutes
Narrator: Michael Pauley
Genre: Romance, lgbt
Buy: Audible | Kindle

Synopsis:

I’ve spent years hoping someone would finally hear me. It’s easier not to try anymore…
Ten years after leaving his small Minnesota hometown in his rearview mirror for what Nolan Grainger was sure would be the last time, life has decided to throw the talented musician a curveball and send him back to the town he lived in but was never really home.

At twenty-eight, Nolan has traveled the world as a successful concert violinist with some of the best symphonies in the country. But success breeds envy, and when Nolan’s benefactor and lover decides Nolan has flown high enough, he cruelly clips Nolan’s wings. The betrayal and ensuing scandal leaves the violinist’s career in shambles and with barely enough money to start fresh somewhere beyond his vindictive ex’s powerful reach. But just as he’s ready to get his life back on track, Nolan gets the call he’s been dreading.

After a stroke leaves his father a partial invalid, duty-bound Nolan returns to Pelican Bay and a life he’s spent years trying to forget. When he’s forced to use the last of his own money to keep from losing the family home, desperation has him turning to the one man he’d hoped never to see again…

Even if I could speak, there wouldn’t be anyone there to listen…
Pelican Bay’s golden boy, Dallas Kent, had the quintessential perfect life. Smart, gorgeous, and popular, the baseball phenom was well on his way to a life filled with fame and fortune. But more importantly, he had a one-way ticket out of Pelican Bay and far away from the family who used love as currency and whose high expectations were the law of the land. But a stormy night, sharp highway curve and one bad decision changed everything, leaving Dallas with nothing.

Because the accident that took his parents, his future and his crown as the boy who could do no wrong, also stole his voice.

Despised for the horrific wreck that ended the lives of two of Pelican Bay’s most respected residents, Dallas has retreated to a secluded stretch of land where he’s found refuge in a menagerie of unwanted animals that don’t care that he once had the world at his feet or that he’ll never speak again.

But when the quiet, bookish boy he wasn’t allowed to notice in school suddenly reappears ten years later at Dallas’s wildlife rehab center in desperate need of a job, Dallas is thrust back into a world he’s worked hard to escape.

Dallas’s silence was supposed to send Nolan scurrying, but what if Nolan ends up being the one person who finally hears him?

Will two men who’ve been fleeing from the past finally come home to Pelican Bay for good or will the silence drive them apart forever?

Review:

I really liked this book. Dallas has been blackballed by the town he grew up in because they all believe he killed his parents, pillars of the community. Injured in the accident that killed his parents Dallas secludes himself on a farm where he helps save injured wildlife. Nolan is back in the boring bible town of Pelican Bay after being unjustly accused of stealing a very expensive violin. Banned from getting any new jobs with orchestras he comes home to help his mother with his father who just had a stroke. Finding his parents in horrible financial straights he tries to get a job to no avail until he convinces his old high school crush Dallas to give him a job.

This is a nice romance with an interesting story and well written characters.  I loved the chemistry between Dallas and Nolan and the complicated relationships they have with their family. Everything about this book worked.  I feel everything wrapped up in the end a little too quick but I also like the set up for the next book.  While this was an audio book the rest of the Pelican Bay series isn't available in this format so I'm going to have to read them on kindle and I can't wait.

Audio Book Review: The Long Way Home by Z.A. Maxfield

Release Date: November 9, 2016
Publisher: Audible Studios
Format: Audio
Length: 8 hours 27 minutes
Narrator: JF Harding
Genre: Romance
Buy: Audible | Kindle

Synopsis:

Ever since the accident that cost him his job on the Seattle police force, Kevin Quinn has been living with psychic abilities he refers to as the 'gift that keeps on taking'. His attempts to use his talents to help the police have been met with limited success. Yet, when teenage boys start going missing from the beach cities of Southern California, Kevin gets on a plane.

Connor Dougal has every reason to believe all psychics are fakes and charlatans. He's still numb from the disappearance of his first love, a boy who went missing 10 years earlier. Everything he aspires to is a direct result of that tragedy, even the acquisition of his detective shield. The irony of having to babysit Kevin Quinn is not lost on him.

These two suspicious men must develop trust and respect for one another to solve the case and, on the way, maybe fall in love.

Review:

Connor Dougal doesn't believe in psychics but he is walking a thin line on a new case and when his sister brings him to a Kevin Quinn show he finds himself drawn to the man.  Connor found the body of a young girl at a murder scene and now seems to be haunted by her ghost.  Connor doesn't believe Kevin can honestly do what he says he can but when he starts to see things he can't explain he has no reason to doubt him.

While Kevin and Connor try to figure out who killed the girl their relationship gets closer and closer.  I love the witty banter between Connor and Kevin and Connors love of punny t-shirts. There is depth to the characters and the mystery keeps you guessing.  I was pleasantly surprised by this book.

Sean O'Hara travels to Ireland to try to figure out what the mystery is behind the stone he inherited from his grandfather is. He turns to Cormac Kelly who at first blows him off as an American tourist out to make fun of druid customs. But something about Sean intrigues Cormac enough to follow him where he discovers that Sean has the attention of a crazy fairy Lord. This sets the adventure on a whole new path where lost loves, and new love meet, through time travel and danger. The past and the present converge as Cormac and Sean travel back in time to try to save someone dear to Cormac and try to break the curse that is tied to Sean's stone.

ARC Book Review: Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier

Release Date: June 12, 2018
Publisher: St. Martins Press
Format: ebook
Pages: 320 pages
Genre:  Mystery/ Thriller
Buy: Kindle | Hardcover | Paperback

Synopsis:

This is the story of three best friends: one who was murdered, one who went to prison, and one who's been searching for the truth all these years . . .

When she was sixteen years old, Angela Wong—one of the most popular girls in school—disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.

But fourteen years later, Angela Wong's remains are discovered in the woods near Geo's childhood home. And Kaiser—now a detective with Seattle PD—finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women.

To the authorities, Calvin is a serial killer. But to Geo, he's something else entirely. Back in high school, Calvin was Geo's first love. Turbulent and often volatile, their relationship bordered on obsession from the moment they met right up until the night Angela was killed.
For fourteen years, Geo knew what happened to Angela and told no one. For fourteen years, she carried the secret of Angela's death until Geo was arrested and sent to prison.

While everyone thinks they finally know the truth, there are dark secrets buried deep. And what happened that fateful night is more complex and more chilling than anyone really knows. Now the obsessive past catches up with the deadly present when new bodies begin to turn up, killed in the exact same manner as Angela Wong.

How far will someone go to bury her secrets and hide her grief? How long can you get away with a lie? How long can you live with it? Find out in Jennifer Hillier's Jar of Hearts.

Review:

Wow, be prepared for a fast paced can't put down ride. Geo goes to prison for her part in her best friends murder, her ex-boyfriend Calvin is a serial killer and Angie was his first kill.  Now Geo is out of jail, Calvin has escaped custody and the killings are happening again, only this time in a bizarre twist its not just women being murdered but children as well.

This is a really well written story, its not just about serial killers and murder but also about abusive relationships.  Its clever plot gives you a glimpse inside prison, what its like to try to reconnect once a prisoner has been released and tries to move on with their lives and how teenage infatuation can change the whole course of your life.

ARC Book Review: Ruthless Magic (Conspiracy of Magic Book 1) by Megan Crewe

Release Date: May 31, 2018
Publisher: Another World Press
Format: ebook
Pages: 368 pages
Genre:  Sci fi/ YA
Buy: Kindle | Hardcover | Paperback

Synopsis:

In the contest to keep their magic, the only options may be die... or kill.

Each year, the North American Confederation of Mages assesses every sixteen-year-old novice. Some will be chosen. The rest must undergo a procedure to destroy their magical ability unless they prove themselves in the mysterious and brutal Mages' Exam.

Disadvantaged by her parents' low standing, Rocío Lopez has dedicated herself to expanding her considerable talent to earn a place in the Confederation. Their rejection leaves her reeling—and determined to fight to keep her magic.

Long ashamed of his mediocre abilities, Finn Lockwood knows the Confederation accepted him only because of his prominent family. Declaring for the Exam instead means a chance to confirm his true worth.

Thrown into the testing with little preparation, Rocío and Finn find themselves becoming unlikely allies—and possibly more. But the Exam holds secrets more horrifying than either could have imagined. What are the examiners really testing them for? And as the trials become increasingly vicious, how much are they willing to sacrifice to win?

Review:

Old magic mages aren't fond of new magic mages.  They aren't given the same priorities and their schools aren't even taught the same way.  When it comes to being accepted into the magical college new magic usually always has to declare for entrance while old magic mages are confirmed despite whether or not their magic is strong. This is sort of a new money/old money fight where the kids have to prove themselves in a magical Hunger Games.

The story is told in alternate chapters of either Rocio a new magic mage of great talent whose abilities seem to be feared by the confederation and Finn who is old magic and comes from a prominent family.  He was confirmed but declined feeling that it was unfair and instead declared for a place. It was interesting to view the things going on through these two very different lenses.

Brutally pitting the kids against magic and each other the confed will only declare a few champions, to take their place in the magical world the others will have their magic burned out. After a brief introduction and set up there is non-stop action and chaos.  Questions abound as to how much the magical world knows about what goes on during these trials and what the nature of magic really is.  Is it alive? Great set-up for the next book but also very good as a stand alone.

Quinn is ready to throw herself into the role, and her hometown's premier sex club, The Den, is the ideal place for a crash course.

At first Marcus Reese is reluctant to take on Quinn's erotic education, despite his intense attraction to the stunning starlet. While she fulfills his every command perfectly, she's also a consummate actress - and Marcus is determined to uncover the real woman hidden behind the mask.

Quinn's been taking direction all her life, so submitting to a Dom comes easily. But it's not just the most amazing sex she's ever had - Marcus challenges her to define her own needs and make her own decisions. And when her training is over, Quinn will have to choose between continuing to play a part in her own life, or living by her own rules.

Review:

Quinn is an actress who comes to The Den to learn about BDSM for her new role.  Marcus takes Quinn on to teach her about his world, what he didn't realize when he agreed is that getting Quinn to submit and find herself would be so disarming. Quinn had no idea that in bdsm she would find an escape, the only way for her to find herself not the person her mother and everyone else wanted her to be. Beautiful and innocent this was another sexy yet romantic story.

Audio Book Review: Bonds of Denial (Wicked Play Book 5) by Lynda Aicher

Release Date: February 3, 2014
Publisher: Carina Press
Format: Audio
Length: 9 hours 36 minutes
Narrator: Decklan McKenna
Genre: BDSM/Romance/Erotica
Buy: Audible | Kindle

Synopsis:

It's been 20 years since Rockford Fielding's father punished him for kissing another boy. Now a grown man with a military career behind him, Rock continues to deny his true desires, even while working security at The Den, the most decadent sex club in town. But after a year of watching gorgeous Carter Montgomery come and go on the arms of other men, Rock can no longer resist the cravings he's denied for so long.

Carter has just four months left on his contract with an escort agency, and he doesn't know whether to feel relieved or afraid. Being an escort is all he knows. Adding to his confusion is the way his latest client, the sexy but stoic Rock, makes him feel things he hasn't wanted in years.

One charmingly awkward date turns into two and soon the men are meeting off the clock. But with Rock in the closet and Carter unsure how to pursue a real relationship, how can they build a future both in and out of the bedroom?

Review:

I think Lynda Aicher is trying to hit every romantic relationship with this series.  So far we have m/f (book 1) m/f (book 2) m/m/f (book 3) m/f (book 4) and now m/m (book 5) and I think book 6 is about a female Domme instead of male.

Other than the fact that Rock works at The Den and is now a part owner this book is not a bdsm book.  Its definitely a romance between two men.  Rock has been running from is sexuality for 34 years. He is so deep in the closet that he can barely admit to himself that he is gay. He has been watching Carter, a male escort for the past year as he has come to The Den with clients and his attraction finally can't be denied. The beginning of their relationship is so heartbreaking and honest it just sucked me in. Rock is filled with so much self loathing and is so awkward its almost difficult to read. Carter starts out very confident but the further he gets in his relationship, the more comfortable he gets and the further he falls for Rock the harder it is for him to wrap his head around believing he could be so lucky.

This is a well done m/m romance that touches on so many topics, gays in the military, how family and friends react when you come out, the plight of sex workers being treated as inhuman, and how simply finding something good can be so scary.

But the chemistry between the trio prompts them to agree to submit to him for one week, and he'll show them both the true pleasure that a dom can provide.
The intimacy could break them all, or bind them together forever....

Review:

Seth seethes as he watches a man being abused in one of his clubs rooms.  He wants to stop it but his business partner Deklan tells him to wait that the sub hasn't said no or used a safe word yet.  When he does they race to save the poor man before he is even more seriously injured.

As Seth takes Tyler down from his bonds and wraps him in warmth and whispers kindness too him Tyler feels himself slipping.  If there is one man he wished to never see him like this it would have been Seth. As an attorney and friend of Cali and Kendra Allison is called in to represent Tyler to help him in case he wants to press charges against the man who abused him. But Tyler ashamed and embarrassed refuses but feels a pull of warmth and attraction toward Allie.

Allison confused by her feelings for both Seth and Tyler doesn't understand how they can want each other and her. It goes against all of her upbringing. How can she be in a relationship with two men? It couldn't possibly work.

As each person struggles with their own demons they must learn to trust each other or things will fall apart.  Without all of them the relationship doesn't work. They balance each other out. Its beautiful, sexy and romantic as hell. Another well done book in this series.

Deklan Winters has had his eye on his attractive neighbor for months, but only senses Kendra is no stranger to the BDSM scene when she walks into his club. And he can tell that's not her only secret. With Deklan's guidance, Kendra begins to accept her forbidden needs and to recognize the fine line between pleasure and pain. But when her former Master returns to reclaim her, it will take all her courage - and all of Deklan's love - to defy her past.

Review:

When Cali (from Bonds of Trust) brings her 2 best friends to The Den for their mardi Gras night Deklan immediately recognizes that Kendra is familiar with this world. Her submissive body language speaks to all the doms in the club and when in a panic of need she breaks from the group and makes her way to the dungeon Deklan feels the pull to save her from herself. Kendra finally told her friends about her experience in bdsm but not the full extent of it. Her ex has robbed her of the ability to feel pleasure without pain and she craves it but is scared that it will lead down the path of abuse that she escaped from. Deklan seems to recognize this in her - can he give her what she wants without breaking her?

Sadly there are too many people out there that abuse others under the guise of bdsm. this story shows the difference. It is powerful, sexy and heartbreaking.

On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person—but also that the cold-reading skills she’s honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money.

Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased…where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it.

Review:

This is a creepy atmospheric mystery that keeps you guessing right up to the end. Hal is down on her luck, a tarot card reader barely scraping by.  Her mother was killed when she was 18 and Hal has been on her own since.  With no family she finds it strange and probably a mistake when she receives a notification in the mail telling her that she was named in someones will as a beneficiary.  Even though it may be a mistake inheriting a few thousand would solve her immediate issues and help her to catch up. Hal decides to give it a try and uses the last of her money to get to Penzance for the reading of the will.  What she finds is a big run down house that seems familiar, and a family that is broken by secrets, anger, and mistrust.

Ware is known for her creepy atmospheric books and this one doesn't disappoint. The mystery keeps you on edge and as the book nears the end you find yourself holding your breath while you watch the final scenes play out. Well done, fast paced mystery that takes you for a ride and when you think you have it all figured out you realize you really had no idea.
