ARC AUDIO BOOK REVIEW: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
REVIEW:
This was my last book for 2024 and it makes me wonder what took me so long to read this. Narration alternates between Tova who works for the Aquarium as a janitor, Marcellus, a giant Pacific Octopus and Cameron a young man who is struggling through life. Each has their own story and how they intersect is brilliantly done. I love Marcellus and the antics he gets up to in the Aquarium after hours. This book brought all the feels. I was crying, I was laughing. Brilliantly written and beautifully narrated this book is one that will stick with me. A story of redemption, found family and compassion. It reminded me of My Octopus Teacher the 2020 film, which is also brilliant.

After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago.
Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.
Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late.
