ARC BOOK REVIEW: Johnny Careless by Kevin Wade
REVIEW:
Thank you to netgalley.com for the free copy of this book. I am leaving this review voluntarily and all opinions are my own.
This book was not what I expected and I was pleasantly surprised. Jeep is the new police detective in the town he grew up in filled with the haves and the have nots. Jeep is a have not, Johnny a trust fund kid, but they become the best of friends. While they no longer spend a lot of time together Johnny still considered Jeep his go to person.
When Jeep rolls up on a murder scene he discovers it's his old friend Johnny is the victim It appears that people high up would like to close this case as an accident. There also seems to be a high end car jacking ring operating in the same area. There doesn't seem to be a connection and Jeep is tasked with stopping the ring or possibly losing his job. Meanwhile Johnny's ex-wife and Jeeps good friend, and boyhood crush, Niven keeps showing up at his house.
This is a great story that jumps around in time taking us back to when Jeep and Johnny were teens at different critical time periods. Through these flashbacks we learn more about Johnny and Jeep. We learn about their character, explore their dreams and learn about the obstacles in their way.
I've never read anything by Kevin Wade before but I will be seeking out his backlist. His writing is gritty and raw and his characters complex. A truly great read.

Police Chief Jeep Mullane has been bounced back home to Long Island’s North Shore by a heartbreaking case that both earned him his NYPD detective’s shield and burned him out of the Job. Now heading up a small local police department, he finds himself navigating the same geography he did growing up there as the son of an NYPD cop. Jeep is a “have-not” among the glittering “haves,” a sharp-witted, down-to-earth man in a territory defined and ruled by multigenerational wealth and power and the daunting tribal codes and customs that come with it.
When the corpse of Jeep’s childhood friend Johnny Chambliss—born into privilege and known as “Johnny Careless” for his reckless, golden-boy antics—surfaces in the Bayville waters, past collides with present, and Jeep is pulled into a treacherous web. He is challenged by Johnny’s wealthy and secretive family and his beautiful, enigmatic ex-wife as he untangles a knotted mystery fraught with theft, corrupt local moguls, and decades-old secrets, all while grappling with his own deep-seated grief for his lost pal.
